Historical Significance: This
specimen represents the final year of mintage for the legendary "Pillar and Worlds"
design. As a 1771 issue from the Mexico City Mint, it is the last of the iconic
Spanish Colonial "Pillar Dollars" before the transition to the Portrait (Bust) type,
making it a cornerstone for any specialized silver crown collection. Eye Appeal &
Toning: Unlike the majority of 18th-century silver found today, this coin is free of
the typical "sea-salvage" corrosion or heavy environmental damage. It is cloaked in a
handsome, original medium-grey toning that provides excellent shelf presence and a
"eye-pleasing" look. Technical Note on Surfaces: While graded "Details" by NGC due to
past cleaning, the surfaces remain remarkably attractive. The cleaning is
exceptionally light and expertly concealed beneath the aged patina. To the naked eye,
the coin presents as a straight-graded AU; only under high-power magnification are
faint hairlines visible, primarily on the obverse. 27.07 grams of 0.917 Silver, 0.798
oz. ASW.
